WATERLOO - Both Monroe's boys and girls track teams had solid nights at the Pirate Invitational in Waterloo. The boys team took first, scoring 190 points to outdistance second-place Portage by 48.5 points. The girls team took second with 154 points. They finished 9.5 points behind first-place Mayville.

The boys team took first in nine events.

"We had some really good performances," said boys coach Curt Miller. "A lot of winners. A lot of medalists. We saw lots of improvements on times. Overall, it was a very good meet."

One winner for the Cheesemakers was Noah Tostrud in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 36.39 seconds.

"Noah Tostrud is a first-year track guy as a junior. This is just his second time ever running a competitive mile. He ran a really, really fast time. He was definitely our performer of the meet," Miller said.

Tostrud teamed with Jake Hirsbrunner, A.J. Cifuentes and Alex Barenklau to win the 1,600 relay (3:39.18).

Barenklau won the 800 (2:04.38) and Hirsbrunner won the high jump (6-feet) and Seth Calaway finished first in the 100 (11:62) just ahead of teammate Forrest Klug-Hanson (11.73).

Klug-Hanson and Calaway teamed with Daokta Phillips and and Blake Bast to win the 400 relay (46.1). The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of David Kelly, Steve Christiansen, Payton Hoesly and Derek Christiansen took first with a time of 8:34.93.

On the girls side, the Cheesemakers won four events.

"We placed a lot of people, two or three in an event," said girls coach Doug Miller. "We had some good performances. It was pouring on us before we got off of the bus. It cleared up for a bit and then it poured during the meet. We did well considering the conditions."

Tabitha Egli won the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 7 inches. Angela Beaver took third in the event with a throw of 32 feet, 6 inches.

"Tabitha throwing in the mid-33s right now is really good. Angela has improved by a half of a foot. Emily Paul also came in eighth. That was a real solid event," Miller said.

Abby Oudinot also had a solid night, winning the triple jump and taking second in the high jump.

"Oudinot won the triple jump kind of into a breeze late in the meet," Miller said. "We had her high jumping and she took second there. It was her first time high jumping this year. Her and Georgie (Myers) at 4-10 form a good 1-2 punch (in the high jump). They'll push each other a little bit."

Kayla Einbeck took first in the 3,200 (13:02.69) and the Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Jess Jackson, Tre Voegeli, McKenzie Hesgard and Mafer Larraga finished first (53.70).

The Monroe track teams are back in action on Tuesday for a double dual at home against Monona Grove and Milton.
