MIDDLETON - The Monroe High School boys track team placed fourth Friday in the Cardinal Relays and the Monroe girls took fifth.

Due to prom weekend and a tough week of workouts, Monroe didn't have the highest number of competitors to enter into the relay meet.

Middleton won both the boys and girls titles.

The Middleton boys racked up 174 points to win the seven-team relay meet. Stoughton took second (121) and Monroe was fourth (88).

"It was one of those relay meets where there were a lot of entries and it was hard for us to fill all of them," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "To place fourth as a team is pretty good against Division 1 teams with a lot more numbers."

The Cheesemakers' 3,200-meter run relay team of junior Drake Ingold, sophomore Kyle Legler and senior Parker Ingold finished third. In the event, each runner ran a 3,200 and the times were added together. Both Drake Ingold (9 minutes, 57 seconds) and Legler (10:05.73) ran personal-best times.

The Cheesemakers' 1,600 relay team of junior Brayden Zettle, junior Jonah Tostrud and Jason Koller took third in 3:32.21.

Zettle teamed with senior Kendall Paulson, junior Jevon Gibson and sophomore Jordan Montgomery to take third in the 800 relay (1:35.14).

"It's a relay where we came out and could have run a couple of seconds faster and been up there with the top teams," Mosher said. "They have been pretty consistent running 1:35."

The Cheesemakers' trio of Scace, Zettle and freshman Judson Rikkers took third in the high jump with a combined height of 15 feet, 8 inches. Both Scace and Zettle cleared 5-4.

The Monroe girls finished top two in seven relays en route to 97 points. Middleton won with 131 followed by Stoughton (122).

"I thought it was a really good showing because we were going up against much bigger Division 1 schools who should beat us," Monroe girls track coach Matt Davis said. "I think we are making strides in our relays."

The 100 high hurdle relay team of seniors Jordan Hirsbrunner, Casey Rielly and freshman Cassi Gersbach won. Hirsbrunner was the overall top finisher (16.08) followed by Rielly in second (16.64). Gersbach was fifth (17.54).

"We have a really good one-two punch," Davis said of Hirsbrunner and Rielly in the hurdles. "Tonight we had three."

Monroe's pole vault trio of senior Josie Eberle, junior Payton Sigafus and freshman Lily Frehner won the event with a combined height of 22 feet. Eberle cleared 8-6 before the rain hit and she stopped vaulting.

"We didn't want her to risk an injury," Davis said. "I didn't expect to win it, but some other schools must have struggled with the wet weather."

The freshmen-sophomore 400 relay team of Jada Love, Emma Sanders, Bri Seagreaves and Faith Koester won in 55.6 seconds.

"I didn't expect them to win it," Davis said. "That was a really good time."

The 300 hurdles trio of Rielly, Gersbach and Seagreaves took second. The varsity 400 relay team of Eberle, Mathiason, Allyce Fahrney and Cammi Ganshert took second (52.43).

The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Ganshert, Eberle, Sydney Mathiason and Hirsbrunner placed second (1:50.92). The same quartet took second in the 800 sprint relay (1:51.85). The time broke the school record (1:54.9) which was set last year at the Cardinal Relays.

"They broke the record by about three seconds," Davis said. "Any time you can get a school record in Monroe it's really nice."

Monroe's discus trio of freshman Chloe Bunker, Sigafus and Mathiason took second. Bunker had the best throw (83-0), taking fourth overall The Cheesemakers also took third in the triple jump relay with senior Lexus Trickel, Gersbach and Koester. Trickel had the best jump overall (33-51⁄4).
