MADISON - For the first time this season, the Monroe boys cross country team was at full strength with its top five runners, and ran to a fourth-place finish at the Madison West Invitational Saturday at Lake Farm Park.

Monroe junior Dylan Scace finished 10th overall with a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds. Senior teammate Nick Baumann took 12th (16:57). Junior Drake Ingold finished 17th (17:12) and sophomore Kyle Legler placed 25th (17:32). Junior Jonah Tostrud took 34th (18:04) to round out the top five for the Cheesemakers. It was the first meet for Scace and Baumann.

Madison West captured the team title, outdistancing Monona Grove 41-63 in the 10-team invite. Madison Memorial (64) took third ahead of the Cheesemakers (98). Madison West's Noah Zamzow won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:09.

"It was nice to see where we are at as a team with everyone in there," Monroe co-coach Jim Ingold said. "We are not where we need to be come conference time."

The Regents also won the girls' team title 45-59 over Waunakee. The Monroe girls finished seventh (152) out of eight teams. Waunakee's Emily Royston won the individual title (19:58). The Cheesemakers held out Monroe senior Jordan Hirsbrunner.

"She (Hirsbrunner) wasn't feeling well," Ingold said. "We didn't want to put her out there if she wasn't feeling well. That made a big difference. If it was conference, she could have run."

Monroe junior Rachel Meier finished 14th (21:23) and junior Kati Symons took 29th (22:44). Symons' time was 1 minute, 24 seconds faster than her time from last week.

"She (Symons) ran a great race," Ingold said. "She was close to her PR."

Senior Allyce Fahrney took 33rd (23:02) and senior Josie Eberle was 35th (23:13). Sophomore teammate Natalie Faith placed 41st (23:20).

"I thought we competed really well," Ingold said. "We had a nice pack running together. We just have to take that pack and keep moving up."

Monroe will be in action at the Badger Challenge Tuesday in Portage.

"Our main concern with the kids is making sure the kids are staying healthy," Ingold said. "We may hold a few kids out on Tuesday. I'm sure their legs are sore. We will see how they are feeling."

After the Badger Challenge, the Cheesemakers will have two straight weeks of practice before their next meet.

"That will really help us," Ingold said. "We are about halfway through the season. We are starting another phase. We will start working at a faster pace and run less miles."
