STOUGHTON - The Monroe boys cross country team had three runners earn Badger South All-Conference honors Saturday in Stoughton.

Monona Grove ran away with the team conference title 29-61 over the Cheesemakers. Monroe junior Dylan Scace finished second with a time of 16 minutes, 34.4 seconds. Monroe senior Nick Baumann took fifth (16:55.4) and junior Drake Ingold placed 15th (17:32.2). Both Scace and Baumann earned first-team all-conference accolades and Ingold was second-team all-conference.

"Windy conditions made it hard to run fast times," Monroe co-coach Jim Ingold said in an email. "The team ran well for half the race, but fell off pace the second half of the course. The difference in the meet was Monona Grove ran a great race while Monroe had a mediocre performance. I really believe Monroe can run with Monona Grove. It wasn't meant to be today."

Ingold said Scace has been a consistent performer all season.

"He ran well and had a gutty finishing kick to place only five seconds behind the winner (Charlie Ellenbecker of Monona Grove)."

Sophomore teammate Kyle Legler finished 17th (17:39) and junior Jonah Tostrud was 22nd (17:59).

The Monroe girls cross country team took fifth (107) out of seven teams. Stoughton captured the conference championship 32-73 over Fort Atkinson.

Monroe junior Rachel Meier took sixth (20:21.7) and earned first-team all-conference honors. Senior teammate Jordan Hirsbrunner finished 10th (20:39.5) and earned second-team all-conference honors.

"It was great to see Rachel get out with the leaders and run strong from the front," Ingold said. "This will help her next week (at the sectional) where there will be over 100 runners competing."

Senior teammate Allyce Fahrney placed 20th (21:26.1) and junior Kati Symons was 31st (22:30.3). Sophomore teammate Natalie Faith placed 40th (23:01.6).

"The team ran well today, but for us to have a shot for state we will need to have our fourth and fifth runners closer to our third runner," Ingold said.
