WATERLOO - The Monroe boys track team ran to the Waterloo Invitational title on Thursday.

The Cheesemakers won nine of the 18 events and easily outdistanced Mayville for the championship, 235-132.5. Northern Badger Conference rival Portage finished third with 120 points.

In a homecoming for Monroe girls track coach Curt Miller, the Lady Cheesemakers beat Mayville, 184.5-146, to win the title.

"I don't know if I expected to win," Monroe boys track coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "That's pretty demanding. We expect our guys to compete well. We knew if we do what we are supposed to do, we would have a very good chance to win.

"We didn't want to overwork anyone in the meet. We still have tired legs."

Monroe senior Tad Christen won the long jump (20 feet, 4 inches) and the triple jump - a personal record 43-1 1/2.

"That's pretty elite company," Hirsbrunner said.

Christen teamed up with Bryan Tordoff, Dan Vale and Brett DeNure to win the 800-meter relay with a time of 1 minute, 32.7 seconds, which was a PR and eight-tenths of a second off the school record time.

Hirsbrunner said the Cheesemakers have a legitimate shot to break the record.

DeNure won the 800 (2:00.6), and teamed up with Cody Plenge, Dylan Starck and Joe Pecora to win the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:45.

Pecora won the 3,200, smashing his PR by 18 seconds with a time of 10:16.

"Joe has been getting steadily better every meet," Hirsbrunner said.

Monroe sophomore Jeff Hill won the pole vault (13-3) and Lucas Leu finished first in the discus (144-7 1/2).

The Cheesemakers' 400 relay team of Garrett Wyss, Mason Goff, Alex Bartlett and Vale finished first with a time of :45.6.

Miller, a Waterloo native, said there was no pressure in bringing a track team to his hometown. It's the fourth year the Cheesemakers have ran at the Waterloo Invite.

"No pressure, but a little bit of excitement," Miller said. "I could tell that carried over to some of the girls. It's fun to bring in a good team and watch them."

Monroe senior Kelsey Duxstad won the 3,200 (12:35) and sophomore Jaclyn Ditter took first in the 300 hurdles (:50.3).

Fellow senior Meaghan Tomasiewicz won the pole vault (10-0). The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Tessa Frutiger, Stephanie Wyss, Madeline Arnold and Tess Seichter finished first with a time of 10:09.4.

"That's a pretty impressive time at this time of year," Miller said.
