MONONA - Runners on the Monroe High School boys track and field team looked at the history of the 3,200-meter relay at the Badger South Conference meet and were proud to learn the Cheesemakers were conference champions in the race every year since 2006.
Monroe's long distance crew wanted to keep the streak of conference titles alive in the 3,200 relay, according to coach Scott Mosher. They did just that on Tuesday at Monroe Grove High School. The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of senior Josh Smith, junior Jonah Tostrud, junior Jason Koller and junior Dylan Scace won the conference title with a time of 8 minutes, 16.74 seconds. It marks the 12th straight year Monroe has won the conference championship in the 3,200 relay.
"If you are a guy in Monroe and on the boys track team you want to run the 4-by-800 relay," Mosher said. "When they found that out they said, 'Let's go after this.'
"They ran to win. Their goal was to win it but save some energy for other races."
Monroe finished fourth in the conference meet with 80 points. Monona Grove racked up 204 points to run away with the conference title. Stoughton finished second (142.5) and Oregon took third (88).
"We thought we could take top three," Mosher said. "We had a relay team disqualified and missed out on some points."
Scace ran to a second-place finish in the 800 (1:58.77) and Tostrud was fifth (2:03.2).
"Dylan ran a great race," Mosher said. "He got boxed in on the first lap. He had to step backwards to get out of it."
Monroe junior Drake Ingold teamed with Koller, Scace and Tostrud to take second in the 1,600 relay (3:32.96), which was about 3 seconds away from conference champion Stoughton in the race.
"They had a great performance," Mosher said. "Everyone stepped up on a hot day."
Monroe junior Brayden Zettle finished second in the triple jump with a jump of 43 feet, 4 inches and fifth in the long jump (20-81⁄4). Zettle has the sixth best triple jump in the history of Monroe boys track.
"He had a really nice day today," Mosher said of Zettle. "If the conditions are right at regionals and sectionals, I think he can get to 44. It's just reaching a little bit further on your landing."
Monroe sophomore Jordan Montgomery finished third in the 100 (11.29) and fifth in the 200 (23.21).
"He's just a competitive kid," Mosher said of Montgomery. "He stepped up, got ready to go and competed hard."
Mosher said Montgomery is the fastest sophomore in the history of Monroe boys track in the 200.
"With his work ethic and desire to do well in this sport, he could be one of the best in Monroe."
Senior Trevor Aebly took third in the 110 high hurdles (15.46).
Koller took fourth in the 400 (51.64). Sophomore Kyle Legler took fifth in the 3,200 (10:16.23).
"Koller had a great meet," Mosher said. "He ran a 51-second quarter-mile and than ran a 51-second anchor leg in the 1,600 relay to help us hold off Milton."
