FOND DU LAC - The Monroe Blues defeated Fond du Lac 5-4 in a thrilling shootout Saturday.
The Blues improve to 7-15 in the Great Lakes Hockey League.
Tom Glomski scored a goal to get Monroe on the board in the first period. Fond du Lac tied it up before the end of the first. Each team scored in the second period with Monroe's Brad Gicopoulos getting a goal.
The teams traded goals in the third period. Fond du Lac scored first, and then the Blues answered with another goal from Glomski. Fond du Lac scored again, but Monroe's Jason Johnson scored with 10.8 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.
After the game was still tied 4-4 after 5 minutes of overtime play, it went into shootout with Fond du Lac scoring only one goal and Monroe scoring two goals for the win. Shootout goals were scored by Glomski and Gicopoulos.
Assists during the first three periods came from Gottlieb Brandli III, Paul Morris, Tom Rane, Andy Koening, Jack Winger, Glomski and Johnson.
The Blues host the Calumet Wolverines at 7 p.m. Saturday at SLICE.
