STOUGHTON - It came down to the wire and the Monroe-New Glarus girls swim team edged Stoughton 89-81 in a dual meet Tuesday to remain unbeaten.

Monroe-New Glarus (6-0, 4-0 Badger South), ranked 10th in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Division 2 state poll, won six events.

"It was a meet of incredibly close races with the closest race being in the 200 free," Monroe-New Glarus coach Linda Moser said. "This is the best record we have had in many years."

Monroe-New Glarus senior Maddie Hammer out-touched Stoughton's Sofia Bormett by 0.03 of a second to win the 200-yard freestyle. Hammer won two individual events including the 100 freestyle (55.62) and 200 freestyle (2 minutes, 1.07 seconds).

"We knew that the meet was most likely going to come down to the 400 free relay and it did," Moser said. "We needed to place first or second and third to win the meet."

The sister relay team of Mekenzie Hammer, Maddie Hammer, Nina Shire and Francesca scherzo swam to a first-place finish in a personal-record time of 3:49.11.

Monroe senior Grace Keith won the 100 butterfly (1:05.22) and Mekenzie Hammer finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:16.69) and won the 100 backstroke (59.36).

The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team of Mekenzie Hammer, Francesca Schiro, Grace Keith and Cammi Gannshert started the meet by winning the race (2:00.67). The Cheesemakers' other 200 medley relay team of Nina Schiro, Kendra Wenger, Anna Newcomer and Megan Benzschawel took third (2:11.42).

"That put Monroe-NG on top 10-2," Moser said. "This helped the girls know they could swim their best and compete with the hope of a win on the scoreboard."

Nina Schiro took second in the 500 freestyle (5:51.90). Francesca Schiro finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.96) and second in the 50 freestyle (26.62). The Cheesemakers' 200 freestyle relay team of Maddie Hammer, junior Emily Meritt, Benzschawel and Ganshert finished second (1:52.50).

Newcomer took third in the 100 backstroke (1:12.13). Nina Scxhiro placed third in the 200 IM (2:29.7) and Ganshert took third in the 100 freestyle (1:01.61).

Monroe-New Glarus will host No. 1-ranked Madison Edgewood at 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Green County YMCA.

"Tomorrow it is back to work in the pool, continuing to improve through hard work and inner drive," Moser said.
