MONROE - There was nothing wrong with the way the Monroe baseball team competed on Friday.
The Cheesemakers defense? That was another story.
Monroe committed a whopping 10 errors and Monona Grove finally defeated the Cheesemakers 9-6 in 10 innings.
It was the second straight extra-inning loss for Monroe (2-14, 1-9 Badger South), which has lost 10 straight.
"The fact that we are competing and putting ourselves in position to win - that wasn't happening a few weeks ago," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "Now we have to take another step by getting some big hits and making plays. If we do that, we'll get in the win column."
Monroe outhit the Silver Eagles 10-9, with Alex Einbeck (3-for-5, two runs), Mitch Riese (2-for-4, two runs) and Austin Burandt (2-for-6, two RBIs) leading the attack.
The Cheesemakers fell behind 3-1 and rallied to take a 4-3 lead.
"That's kind of when we started having some defensive issues," Huffman said.
Monroe scored twice in the seventh on fielder's choices by Jared Webber and Riese to force bonus baseball.
"We had the bases loaded in the seventh and scored two runs to extend it, but we weren't able to come up with the big hit to win it," Huffman said.
MG's Dean Wojtka drove home the winning run in the 10th with a safety squeeze and Bryce Calscheur added a two-run single.
Weber took the loss, but Huffman said the Cheesemakers' pitching was solid all day.
"We only gave up three earned runs, so the kids were doing what we asked them to do," Huffman said.
