MONROE - Logan Weckerly couldn't wait to get out of a cast on his foot that robbed the final month of the spring baseball season.
Weckerly, who will be a senior at Monroe High School in the fall, suffered a fracture in the growth plate of his ankle, and his season was cut short. He couldn't play in Monroe's regional game at Clinton, and was happy to be back pitching again, helping the Monroe Senior team beat Evansville 13-5 Friday.
"It felt really good to get back out there and do what I could to get the win," Weckerly said. "It (the ankle) feels great. It's a lot better now. I wore an ankle brace to stabilize it. A few people came to me and said my velocity was up. I felt confident in my curveball and it really worked."
Weckerly pitched five innings and gave up two runs on four hits. He struck out six and walked two.
"He (Weckerly) came out and threw well," Monroe coach Eric Losenegger said. "He gave us a chance to win."
Monroe gave Weckerly plenty of run support. Tyler Dahl reached on an error in the first inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Chase Hellenbrand. Monroe came through with a four-run third. Dahl reached on an error and stole second. Brian Wang singled to right field and Hellenbrand delivered an RBI double to left. Sean Saxby came through with a two-run double to left to give Monroe a 4-0 lead. Garrett Gogin, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI, singled and Tayler Rupnow knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0.
Monroe scored five runs in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Gogin had a key two-run double in the fourth and he added a two-run triple in the sixth. Wang went 2-for-2, Saxby was 2-for-3 and Hellenbrand was 2-for-4.
"They put good swings on it," Losenegger said. "Both pitchers we saw were pretty decent. We had some clutch two out hits. We scored on a lot of baseball plays. We hit the ball to the right side with less than two outs and had some sacrifice flys."
Losenegger wants the players to use the summer to develop more as hitters by knowing the situation in a game.
"I think if they keep having at-bats like they are it will carry over and they will have more confidence with it," he said of the next spring high school baseball season.
Monroe will be short-handed with two games at Orangeville today. Monroe will have just nine players when they play Orangeville at 10 a.m. today and Winnebago at noon in Orangeville.
