MADISON - The Cheesemakers held a one-run lead heading into the sixth inning of their game against conference foe Madison Edgewood, but as the end of the game neared, the host Crusaders rallied back as they pulled away with a 5-3 victory.
An error in the first inning allowed Edgewood to score the game's first run, but in the third inning the Cheesemakers offense kicked into gear as Monroe scored three runs off of RBIs from Brian Wang, Sean Saxby, and Matt Coplien.
Lucas Neuenschwander started on the mound for the Cheesemakers and through his five and one-thirds innings of work, the junior hurler held Edgewood in check. Chase Hellenbrand came into relief, but despite hitting the strikezone, the Crusaders rallied with a three-run sixth inning to take the lead.
"Chase threw strikes, but they (Edgewood) just finally started to put the bat on the ball," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "Overall, we played very well. We only had one error in the first, and offensively we had 10 hits. Anytime your team is able to do that, you're in a good position to win."
Wang (3-for-4), Saxby (2-for-3), Coplien (1-for-3), and Carter Adkins (2-for-2) paced the Cheesemakers offensively.
Despite the loss, Huffman feels that his team is making strides in their play.
"I like the way we're playing, and I think we're heading in the right direction."
