Monroe advances quartet to conference semis

OREGON - The Monroe wrestling team has four wrestlers still alive for conference championships after the first day of the Badger Conference tournament Friday night.

The quartet of Cheesemaker wrestlers who advanced to today's semifinals include senior Gavin Wels, sophomore Steven Steiner, junior Dillon Weckerly and senior Lucas Leu.

Wels, ranked fourth at 112 pounds in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll, breezed into the semifinals. Wels received a first round bye and then defeated DeForest freshman Corey Brown, 7-4 in the quarterfinals.

Steiner (152) defeated Fort Atkinson's Drew Dunkleberger in a technical fall. Steiner then pinned Stoughton's Chris Dvorak in 3:29.

Weckerly (171) pinned Portage freshman Nick Lindner in 3:33 in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Weckerly defeated Oregon junior Dustin Lee, 10-6. Lee was 6-1 in conference entering the tournament.

Leu at heavyweight received a first round bye and then pinned Madison Edgewood sophomore Riley Quaerna in 1:42 to advance to the semifinals.

Sophomore Dylan Schwitz (135) pinned Fort Atkinson's Kyle Young in 5:39. In the quarterfinals, Schwitz was pinned by Madison Edgewood senior Shane Sweeney.

Senior Michael Ingold pinned Portage's Dylan Brener in 3:37. Ingold had his semifinal bid dashed when he was pinned in 3:09 by Oregon's Kevin Sommers, who entered the tournament unbeaten in conference.

Cory Kundert (215) also received a first round bye and then was pinned by Reedsburg's Seth Brandt in the quarterfinals in 4:20.
