Monona Grove topples Avalanche

MONROE - Monona Grove's Alex Baldwin scored four goals to power the Silver Eagles to a 13-2 win over the Monroe boys hockey co-op on Saturday.

Monona Grove scored six power-play goals to take advantage of a series of penalties on the Avalanche. Monona Grove's Chase Hattin helped the Silver Eagles strike first with a goal early on. Four of the six goals the Silver Eagles scored in the first period came on the power play. With the loss, Monroe drops to 1-14, 0-7 Badger South.

"One of our players got a 5-minute major for checking from behind and MG scored four goals before it was over," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "We never recovered from that."

Monona Grove outshot the Avalanche 68-17. Monroe's Evan Byrnes scored a goal on an assist by Tyler Johnson with 1:34 to go in the second period.

The other goal for the Avalanche came when freshman Joe Wyss who scored early in the third period on assists from Jared Cline and Colton O'Connor.

Monroe goalie Dan Guilliams had 55 saves.
