MONONA - As the old adage goes: All good things must come to an end. For the Monroe softball team, their 22-game conference winning streak came to an abrupt end on Tuesday, as the Cheesemakers lost 5-4 in 10 innings against the Silver Eagles.
The Cheesemakers got their first score of the game in the opening inning after a line drive was smacked back at Monona Grove pitcher Kelsey Stinson.
After being down for a moment, Stinson returned to pitch the remainder of the game for the Eagles. After both teams were tied at the end of seven innings, Monroe senior Kirsten Vetterli smashed a two-run homer at the top of the 10th inning to give the Cheesemakers the lead. However, Monona Grove had just enough left in the tank, as the Eagles compiled three runs in bottom of the 10th to steal the victory and shatter Monroe's conference winning streak.
"This was a tough loss," Cheesemakers coach Dale Buvid said. "But give them (Monona Grove) credit. They overcame a lot, and they showed how tough they are as a team. We played well, but they played great. Unfortunately someone had to lose."
Natalie Dillon pitched all 10 innings, with three earned runs, five walks and six strikeouts. Taylor O'Leksy was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Cheesemakers. With the loss, Monroe falls to 14-2 on the season, with a 6-1 conference record.
