MONONA - Monona Grove freshman McKenna Warnock scored a game-high 22 points and hit three of the Silver Eagles' 10 three-pointers in a 75-46 win over Monroe Friday.
Monona Grove senior Autumn Ogden, a North Dakota State recruit, scored 21 points and senior Kelsey Stinson, a Division II Minnesota-Crookston recruit, chipped in 14 points.
Monona Grove (16-4, 8-3 Badger South) knocked down six 3-pointers in the first half en route to building a 43-25 lead over the Cheesemakers (9-12, 3-8).
"They shot the ball well," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "If Monona Grove is going to hit 10 3-pointers they will be a tough team to beat because they can face you and drive."
Monroe freshman Emily Benzschawel scored a team-high 13 points, and freshman Sydney Hilliard added 12 points.
The Silver Eagles switched between playing 1-3-1 zone, 2-3 zone and man-to-man defenses.
"They did a good job of switching their defenses," Mathiason said. "When they play a different defense against you there are different parts of the court that are open and you have to cut to different spots on the floor."
Mathiason will have his seeding meeting for the tournament today. If Monroe can get a top eight seed, the Cheesemakers would play a home regional quarterfinal game Feb. 23. Mathiason doesn't see the seeding as clear as previous years.
"The top four teams are pretty clear," he said. "The next three after that and the bottom four, it's open. I'm not sure what will happen."
Eight of Monroe's 12 losses have come to teams ranked in the top 10 in the state including Verona (18-2), No. 3 in Division 1, and Beaver Dam, No. 2 in Division 2.
"I'm hoping it will help in the seeding," Mathiason said. "You never know what other coaches will think. It's hard to be able to predict."
