MONONA - The Monroe girls tennis team lost a Badger South Conference match 6-1 to Monona Grove Thursday.
Three of the matches went three sets.
"They played their hearts out," Monroe coach Tim Walsh said. "We are close to getting a few more wins in conference."
The Monroe senior No. 1 doubles team of Erin Gellings and Paige Prien defeated Monona Grove's Liz Shvern and Kiona Meinholtz in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
"They played great tennis and closed it out," Walsh said.
Monroe junior Eva Priewe at No. 2 singles lost a three set heartbreaker 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to Danya Trimborn. At No. 1 singles, Monona Grove's Sarah Trimborn defeated Monroe senior Chelsea Miller 6-2, 6-0 and junior Katie Demianiuk at No. 3 singles lost due to a triceps injury. She defeated Rachel Wilson 6-2 in the first set and then dropped the second set 7-5. She wasn't able to finish the match due to the injury. Monona Grove junior Paige Martin defeated Monroe freshman Ashley Placek 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 2 doubles, Monona Grove's Emma Cosby and Rysa Weigal-Sterr beat the Cheesemakers' Amber Jenson and Maggie Setterstrom 6-0, 6-2. Monona Grove's Megan DeVault and Kelcie Lee beat Monroe's Maija Liimatainen and Morgan Quinn 6-2, 6-1.
Monroe (1-5, 1-3 Badger South) will host Milton at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22 in Monroe.
