MONONA - The Monroe girls basketball team couldn't sustain a strong first quarter and lost to Monona Grove 58-21 Friday, Jan. 17.

Monroe scored 15 points in the first quarter and trailed by eight at the end of the first period. However, Monona Grove, ranked 6th, held Monroe scoreless for more than 16 minutes as the Silver Eagles outscored the Cheesemakers 32-0 in the second and third quarters. With the loss, Monroe drops to 3-8, 1-3 Badger South.

"Our big thing is we had some opportunities after beating their press and we didn't convert," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "We were just not able to be consistent for four quarters. It's one of those things where you miss those opportunities and it just snowballs on you."

Monona Grove's Alexa Kelsey scored a game-high 17 points and Taylor Nelson added 13 points. Monroe junior Alacia Keegan scored a team-high seven points for the Cheesemakers. Sophomore teammate Brooke Adams chipped in six points.

The Silver Eagles used a full-court press and did some trapping out of the press.

"You have to be able to make that first pass out of the trap," Mathiason said. "Sometimes when you get rushed you lose your focus. Sometimes you miss some shots you feel you should make and that builds on itself. When they went on that run in the second quarter we just had no answers. We were not able to get any conversions."
