Monona Grove girls shut down Monroe

MONONA - The Monroe girls basketball had a tough night against the No. 1 ranked team in Division 2, as the Cheesemakers fell to Monona Grove, 75-33.

"They're very good," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "There's a reason they haven't lost and are ranked as highly as they are. We knew they would put a lot of pressure on us. But when we made them defend in the halfcourt we did a pretty good job. We were able to get the ball into the post some."

Taylor Barrett was the leading scorer for the Cheesemakers with 10 points. Monona Grove was led by Alexa Kennedy, who had 22 for the Silver Eagles.

One bright spot for the Cheesemakers was the return of guard Vanessa Studer who suffered a knee injury last spring during soccer. She was medically cleared to return to action Friday night.

"We were able to get her a couple minutes in the fourth to get that game action and build that confidence and stamina," Mathiason said.

Monroe (1-9, 0-4 in the Badger South) will look to pick up their first conference win of the season next Thursday at home against Madison Edgewood. Mathiason said his team just needs to stay patient and keep trying to improve.

"After a game like this you have to keep learning and take it one step at a time," he said.
