Monona Grove breezes by Monroe

MONONA - Monroe High School sophomore Grace Tostrud picked up a win at No. 2 singles, but Monona Grove knocked off the Cheesemakers girls tennis team 6-1 on Thursday.

"One of our girls summed it up best when they walked off the court. She said, 'We were in every game,'" Monroe coach Brad Saugstad. "That was absolutely correct. Outside of (No. 1) doubles, Monona Grove did not appear to be a dominant team and we were in every game, but they are a team that has a great deal of consistency. Their players did not beat themselves with many errors, and they kept the ball in play really well."

Tostrud defeated Monona Grove sophomore Payton Lee 6-4, 6-2.

"Grace knows she wants to get to the net, and she had a lot of success up there tonight," Saugstad said. "She stuck to her game plan and was really in control the whole match."

At No. 1 singles, Monona Grove's McKenna Doherty beat Monroe senior Maggie Setterstrom 6-2, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Monona Grove sophomore Maelia Dziedzic defeated Monroe sophomore Emma Towne 6-2, 6-0. The Silver Eagles' Kyanna Weigel-Starr defeated Monroe senior Skye Allen 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

Monona Grove's No. 1 doubles team of Amanda Newman and Hailey Munz beat the Cheesemakers' Hallie Signer and Jensen Christensen 6-0, 6-0.

"Hallie Signer and Jensen Christensen played a team that finished in the top eight in Division 1 at state last year," Saugstad said. "We competed, but that team was just at a different level."

At No. 2 doubles, the Silver Eagles' Jewel Lindwall and Sara Paulson defeated Monroe seniors Parris Bunker and Kiara Miller 6-2, 6-0. Monona Grove's No. 3 doubles team of Kailey Devogt and Colleen Ross beat the Cheesemakers' Jessa Lucas and Becky Thoman 6-2, 6-2.
