Monroe cross country and track and field coach Dave Hirsbrunner, who's been organizing the meet since its conception, loves to see the varying motivation.
"Some of them are just here to have fun, but then some of them you see it - they're getting angry and getting after it ... that's fun," Hirsbrunner said.
Many of the youth were clearly getting their first taste of competition. Eleven-year-old Jarson Kuester (15.37 seconds) narrowly pulled away from 10-year-old Garret Gogin in a 100-meter dash heat. Kuester's hair bobbed madly with his swaying head down the final 20 meters, and Gogin was more enamored with the satisfaction of the battle than he was disappointed with settling for silver.
"Wow," Gogin got out between breaths. "By less than a second!"
Shortly thereafter, Kuester and Gogin joined forces along with Joel Faith and Jack Schluesche to win the 5th-6th-grade division of the 4x100 relay.
Still too young to compete in the high jump, Hirsbrunner's daughter Jordan shied away from a just-for-kicks leap before getting herself to go for it. After she cleared the bar, she dashed back, exclaiming, "I want to do it again!"
"I used to get all worried and nervous about them and now I can sit back and just watch them compete," Hirsbrunner said. "They both had great days today."
Jordan's big brother Jake won the 5th-6th-grade high jump (4 feet, 3 inches), as well as the triple jump (28-0) and Jordan settled for winning the 2nd-4th-grade long jump at 9-7, more than a foot longer than the rest of the field.
Whether future Cheesemaker track stars or just athletes out for a morning workout, 196 competitors turned out Tuesday, the largest enrollment to date.
"Hirsh" is proud to watch his current prep stars pay it forward as he records the times. All the meets are organized by high school students.
"This whole meet is run by high school kids," Hirsbrunner said. "They're helping out with the Phy Ed classes I teach and they're here helping with this every time. It's awesome. That just doesn't happen."
It does when it holds nostalgic value.
"The high school kids always say, 'I remember this from when I was in the fourth grade and I loved it,'" Hirsbrunner said.
Hirsbrunner says having such a bevvy of promising young talent "trickles down" from the youngsters' parents.
For instance, Hirsbrunner likened Nick Baumann's dominance of the mile (first in 2nd-4th: 2:54.48) to his father's years back.
"Charlie was a pretty darn good runner back in his day," Hirsbrunner said.
Many rising stars claimed multiple gold medals.
