WHITEWATER - Monroe senior Ethan Moehn looked in midseason form after running to the championship in the 1,600-meter run at the WTFA Indoor Championships Saturday, April 5 at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Moehn, a University of Arkansas recruit, won the 1,600 in a season-best time of 4 minutes, 19.2 seconds. He finished just ahead of McDonell's Nick Zander who took second (4:19.35) and Darlington senior Tyson Miehe who finished third (4:24.32). The time for Moehn marks his fastest time during the season.
Fellow senior Noah Tostrud, a state qualifier in the 1,600 in his first year in track last year, finished 16th (4:33.26).
Monroe senior Jake Hirsbrunner took fourth place in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches). Kaukauna senior Trent Nytes, last year's Division 1 state champion, won the high jump title (6-8) and Seymour senior Alex Bloom, last year's Division 2 state champion, took second (6-8).
Hirsbrunner also finished 13th in the 800 (2:01.8).
The indoor championships featured 41 schools; many in the top 10 are Division 1 schools. Green Bay Preble won the indoor team title 68-33 over Mount Horeb. Monroe finished 10th (14.5 points) and Darlington tied for 26th (6).
"To win an event at the TFA is a big deal," Monroe distance coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "He (Moehn) showed how versatile he is. He showed he can dominate at any distance.
"All three guys really had solid performances. It tells us where we are at right now. We want to use it as a bookmark for the season. We are ahead of last year by quite a bit now."
In the girls' meet, the Cheesemakers finished 13th (12) out of 49 teams and had three top eight finishes. Monroe senior Tre Voegeli took third place in the pole vault (10-0), freshman Jordan Hirsbrunner finished third in the high jump (5-2) and sophomore Abby Oudinot pulled off a lifetime best 34-0 to take eighth in the triple jump.
"She (Voegeli) looked great in all of her vaults," Monroe girls coach Doug Miller said. "Her speed down the runway was great."
Miller said Hirsbrunner did a great job staying in contention in the high jump where the event lasted more than four hours.
Miller was excited by many of the performances by the Cheesemakers. He cited Lauren Werth running the 55 in 7.83 seconds and Makayla Phillips finishing the 55 in 8.08. Freshman Ciara Caderly ran the 1,600 in 5:54.95 and freshman Josie Eberle ran the 800 in 2:44.20.
Albany senior Bailey Hlavachek took 13th in the 800 (2:26.33).
