WHITEWATER - Monroe junior Ethan Moehn proved to be the head of an elite class at the WTFA Indoor State Championships Saturday, April 6, winning the 800-meter run at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Moehn, the WIAA Division 2 state champion who set a state record last year, won the race with a time of 1 minute, 56.81 seconds. Moehn passed Madison La Follette's Chandler Diffee on the third lap and held off the 2011 Division 1 state cross country champion.

"If you can find any way to place in the state championships, it's pretty impressive, much less winning an event," Monroe boys track coach Curt Miller said. "Anything under 2 minutes would have been a positive. The field was really tough. He ran a really smart race. He is ahead of where he was at this point last year."

Green Bay Preble ran away with the team championship 63-29 over Homestead. Monroe tied Tomah for sixth place in the WTFA Championships that included more than 50 teams.

Monroe junior Jake Hirsbrunner cleared a personal-best, 6 feet, 6 inches to take second place in the high jump. He also finished 12th in the 800 (2:02.51).

"That's a great indoor jump and a great place to be this early in the year," Miller said of Hirsbrunner.

Monroe senior Alex Barenklau finished seventh in the 400 (:51.85) and Darlington junior Tyson Miehe took second in the 1,600 (4:25.75).

In the girls' meet, the top finish for the Cheesemaker was junior Tre Voegeli who finished 13th in the pole vault (9-0). Georgie Myers tied for 17th in the high jump (4-10) and Albany's Chantel Rogers was 19th in the 400 (1:03.29).

Milwaukee King (65) won the team title over Milwaukee Riverside (35).

The Cheesemakers' 800 relay team of Lauren Werth, Mafer Larraga, Abby Oudinot and Courtney Jackson finished 26th with a time of 1:55.1.

Monroe will host the Dick Glendenning Invitational Tuesday, April 9. The meet will feature every track team in Green and Lafayette counties.

"It's neat to get a load of talent together from different schools and let the kids compete," Miller said.
