RODHEAD - A strong first half propelled the Brodhead girls basketball team to a 68-42 win over Jefferson Friday night.
The Cardinals took an 18-6 lead after the first quarter and increased that lead to 38-15 at halftime.
"We hit some shots early and that opened some things up early on," Brodhead coach Brad Pickett said. "On defense we got stops and got some easy transition baskets. It was a physical game. Jefferson didn't back down, and we had to match that physicality."
The Cardinals had four players score in double figures. Kylie Moe led the team with 14 points. Rachel Heller (13), Carly Mohns (11), and Mariah Ahrens (10) also contributed for the Cardinals. Pickett said it was nice to see so many offensive contributors.
"It's so good for us to have that balance," he said. "You can't key on one or two kids. That benefits us because if they take away one kid, another one steps up. Our depth has definitely been one of our biggest strengths."
Brodhead (11-0, 8-0 Rock Valley South) will look to keep its undefeated season alive, Monday against Oregon.
Darlington 40, Southwestern 33
PLATTEVILLE - After a cold start, the Darlington girls basketball team recovered to knock off Southwestern at the SWAL Jamboree at UW-Platteville. The Redbirds beat the Wildcats, 40-33.
Southwestern led 8-5 after the first quarter. The Redbirds recovered to take a 15-12 lead into the half. Darlington built themselves a cushion in the third quarter by outscoring the Wildcats 40-33. The Redbirds scored 14 in the fourth to help fend off a Southwestern rally. Darlington coach Riley Fitzsimons said the difference between the first and second half was shooting.
"We were 5-31 in the first half; 16 percent," he said. "We couldn't drop it in the Atlantic Ocean, but then in the second half we shot 53 percent."
Cassidy Chambers scored 14 points to lead Darlington. Fitzsimons said the Redbirds went with a basic offensive gameplan, so as to not reveal too much before their big game with Cuba City on Thursday.
"Cuba was there scouting, so we kinda kept it vanilla," he said.
Darlington (10-2, 6-1) lost to the Cubans, 40-29, on Nov. 30. Cuba City still hasn't lost a conference game, so Thursday's battle will likely decide who wins the conference. Fitzsimons said his team will need to be aggressive to knock off the Cubans.
"I think the key is handling the pressure and working on attacking their zone and just finishing around the basket," he said. "I think if we can finish at the basket and keep it close, we can get the win."
