Mites advance to state tourney

The Monroe Youth Hockey Avalanche Mite A team won the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) Region 4 championship and will advance to state.

On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Avalanche Mite A team traveled to the Madison Ice Arena to take on the Sauk Prairie Mite A team. The Avalanche defeated Sauk Prairie 7-0.

Cade Janecke lead the scoring by recording five goals for the Avalanche. Tessa Janecke and Broc Kuberski each had one goal. Assists were recorded by Tessa Janecke and Luke Kuberski. Heath Bear stopped all eight shots he faced in goal to preserve the shutout. The Avalanche strong defensive line - consisting of Payton Stauffacher, Haley Knauf, Luke Kuberski, and Kaiden Klitzke - played aggressively to keep the puck away from the goal and inside the zone.

The first win of state play enabled the Avalanche team to take on the Oregon Mite A on Sunday, Feb. 6. Monroe defeated Oregon 4-1.

Oregon opened the scoring in the first period 1-0. In the second period, the Avalanche responded with three goals. Tessa Janecke and two by Cade Janecke each scored once. Payton Stauffacher recorded one assist. The Avalanche had one more goal by Cade Janecke, assisted by Luke Kuberski.

Heath Bear stopped all nine shots he faced in goal to preserve the shutout. In addition, the Avalanche's strong defensive line consisting of Haley Knauf, Luke Kuberski, Payton Stauffacher, and Kaiden Klitzke played aggressively to keep the puck away from the goal.

The state tournament will be held in Altoona March 12-13.

Members of the team are Heath Bear, Anika Einbeck, Alyssa Knauf, Haley Knauf, Kaiden Klitzke, Cade Janecke, Tessa Janecke, Broc Kuberski, Luke Kuberski, Payton Stauffacher, Bryce Montgomery, and Brady Smith.
