BRODHEAD - Several bloop hits helped Mineral Point to a big four-run fifth inning as the Pointers knocked off Brodhead 5-3 in a WIAA Division 3 sectional title game Thursday, May 30.

With two runners on, Brodhead coach B.J. Bockhop had senior pitcher Amanda Pickel walk Mineral Point's Beth Wood, who hit .662 in the SWAL this season. Mineral Point's Paula Pittz came through with an RBI single to key a four-run inning.

"We played the odds and it didn't work out for us," Brodhead coach B.J. Bockhop said of the walk to Wood. "Pittz hit a little Texas Leaguer. They just had some timely hits in the fifth inning."

Brodhead (16-9) and Mineral Point (21-3) were scoreless after four innings.

"When it was 0-0 in the fifth, we were playing for one run," Bockhop said. "I thought one run would win it."

Brodhead senior Taylor Douglas and sophomore Erin Kloepping were each 2-for-4 for the Cardinals.

Pickel pitched six innings and gave up give runs on seven hits. She struck out five and walked five.

All three of the Cardinals' senior captains including Pickel, Douglas and Taurie Burns will play in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Coaches Association Division 3 All-Star game June 15.

"I told them I was proud of them and all of their accomplishments," Bockhop said. "It's one of those moments where you don't know what to say."
