SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk football coach Cory Milz was honored by the Green Bay Packers Sept. 24 during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Lambeau Field.

Milz was named the Green Bay Packers High School Coach of the Week after Black Hawk beat Pecatonica-Argyle 22-20 in a last-second thriller in Week 4 on Sept. 8. Milz received a $1,000 donation to the Black Hawk football program for the honor.

A community member within the Black Hawk School District nominated Milz.

"We have a tremendous amount of gratitude towards our community," Milz said. "For someone to take the time to fill out all of that paperwork tells us what we are doing has a lot of meaning. It shows the work we do has validation. It was great recognition for our program."

Milz is in his 16th year coaching Black Hawk, and the Warriors are 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Six Rivers Conference. He helped guide the Warriors to an unbeaten season and a WIAA Division 7 state championship in 2013. Milz also serves as the principal at Black Hawk.

The Packers also invited Black Hawk and Pecatonica-Argyle football players to compete in a quarterback challenge before the Packers-Bengals game. Black Hawk senior Michael Flanagan completed a long pass, which was two yards further than the Vikings. Flanagan, along with senior Jett Rufenacht and junior Colby Argall, won the quarterback challenge for the Warriors over the Vikings and they received another $500 for the football program.

Pecatonica-Argyle was represented by seniors Brent Ritschard, Evan Prust and Cory Swenson.

"They wanted a rivalry situation for the competition," Milz said.

There was a big turnout of Black Hawk alumni at the Packers-Bengals game to see Darlington native Alex Erickson of the Bengals play against the Packers.

"I got a lot of texts and messages from alumni at the game," Milz said. "You couldn't have asked for a better experience with Alex returning and being from southwest Wisconsin."

Milz was born in Monroe and graduated from Black Hawk High School in 1990. In high school, Milz was a four-sport athlete playing football, basketball, baseball and track. Milz played quarterback and safety for Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame member Dennis Murphy. Following high school, he attended University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and graduated in 1994.

Milz and his staff oversee a program of 37 players, with 22 of them suiting up for varsity games. His assistant staff includes Mike Bainbridge, Todd Rood, Torrey Rood, Matt Burkhalter, Andrew Beach, Shane Jackson, Joe Hartwig, Charlie Anderson and Kurt Ellefson.

Milz said the $1,500 from the Packers will go into the Black Hawk football program's general fund.

"We will use it for equipment and helmet replacement," Milz said. "With the rising cost of equipment, it will help us keep up with that."
