Milton trips Monroe; Albany knocks off Black Hawk

MILTON - The rain and the wind made for an unpleasant night to be outdoors Thursday. It was also an unpleasant night indoors for the Monroe volleyball team.

The Cheesemakers were swept in three sets for the sixth time this season, this time by the Milton Red Hawks, 25-12, 25-18, 25-11 in a Badger South Conference volleyball match.

For Monroe, senior Kirstie Hinojosa delivered five kills and junior Heather Barta added 14 assists. The Cheesemakers also got two blocks from sophomore Taylor Barrett and Alexa Wyss came through with eight digs.

Monroe dropped to 0-8 in the Badger South and will host Monona Grove Tuesday.

Albany 3, Black Hawk 2

ALBANY - With the regular season winding down, the Albany Comets were hoping for a strong finish. A big win over the Black Hawk Warriors has given the Comets a reason to believe they can do it.

The Comets outlasted the Warriors, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-10 in a Six Rivers East Conference match Thursday.

Junior Cassidy Bump had a hand in practically all of the Comets' scoring with eight kills, 10 assists and 24 digs. It was also a big night for senior Jordan Neuenschwander, who had nine kills, five aces, and a block for the Comets. Junior Kirstie Kauk also contributed to the win with 19 digs and four aces.

"I'm really, really proud of the girls. They didn't quit," said Albany head coach Connie Wunschel. "Sometimes you have to hit a low to find yourself and know what you can do," said Wunschel, refering to Tuesday's loss to Pecatonica.

Black Hawk was led by seniors Katie Quinn with 13 kills and Chaesta Shager with 28 assists. Junior Abby Schiferl dropped in a pair of aces and added 19 digs for the Warriors. Sophomore Jen Wellnitz did not play due to illness.

Albany (2-12, 2-7 Six Rivers East) will travel to Barneveld, and Black Hawk (4-4, 4-3 Six Rivers East) will compete in the North Crawford Tournament Saturday before resuming conference play at home against Monticello Tuesday.

Brodhead 3, Clinton 2

CLINTON - It was a strange night for the Brodhead Cardinals Thursday in a five set win over the Clinton Cougars. The Cardinals either dominated or lost a close game by scores of 23-25, 25-6, 25-10, 23-25, 15-11 in Rock Valley South Conference action.

Junior Taylor Douglas put down 15 kills and freshman Payton Wright racked up another big assist night with 28. Junior Amanda Pickel had 13 digs and sophomore Rachel Heller added six aces for the Cardinals.

Brodhead (12-13, 4-3 Rock Valley South will play in the Portage Invitational Saturday, the travel to Beloit Turner Tuesday.
