MILTON - Milton's Ella Silha scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 26th minute as the Red Hawks handed the Monroe girls soccer team its first loss of the season 3-1 on Saturday.

Milton snapped the Cheesemakers' five-game winning streak. It was the Badger South Conference opener for both teams. With the loss, Monroe drops to 5-1, 0-1 Badger South.

"There is no doubt that Milton is a very fast and skilled team," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said. "We knew going into it that it would be a tough match. They are a better team than last year and would be a challenge for us."

The Cheesemakers struck first in the first half. Monroe senior Sami Curtis scored a goal on an assist from senior Maddie Kallgren at 20 minutes, 41 seconds. The Red Hawks responded with three first-half goals.

With the win, Milton improves to 5-1, 1-0 Badger South.

Milton's Kylie Campion scored the game-tying goal at 23:05. Then Silha scored the go-ahead goal at 25:12. Milton's Maggie Henschler sealed the win for the Red Hawks by scoring a goal off a penalty kick at 44:08.

Monroe freshman goalie Anna Latimer had 14 saves.

"It was our third tough match in five days," O'Neill said. "With our numbers, that is an issue. I think we put up a good fight. This game just wasn't meant to be. It's good to play some games against stronger teams. It will only make you better."

Monroe will play at Beloit Memorial today in a rescheduled game.
