MILTON - There's no denying the football history between Monroe and Milton.
The rivalry opened a new chapter with the Red Hawks blitzing the visiting Cheesemakers for a 61-0 win in their Badger South debut Friday night.
A lot has changed since the Cheesemakers, a five-time state champion and 12-time Badger Conference champion in the 1990s and 1980s owned the Red Hawks in five playoff wins.
The Cheesemakers (1-2, 0-1 Badger South), who won their first game since 2006 with a 28-21 victory over Portage last week, will use the loss as measuring stick in first year coach Curt Miller's quest to build a contender
in the Badger South.
"We knew that Milton had a great football team," Miller said. "We knew we would have our work cut out for us stopping all their weapons."
Milton (2-1, 1-0), who beat last year's WIAA Division 2 state runner-up in DeForest 46-41 in its season opener, was just as impressive against the Cheesemakers.
The Red Hawks, coming off four straight Southern Lakes Conference championships, look to build on that football tradition in the Badger South.
"Milton has a great football tradition," Milton coach Jeff Bachinski said. "We have never beaten Monroe. I'm very happy with the situation."
The Red Hawks struck first on their opening drive, marching 62 yards in seven plays capped off by Milton senior Nick Karleski's 20-yard TD catch and run on a pass from Zach Fry. Milton senior Hank McIvor did the power running on the drive, rushing for 47 yards on six carries.
After three plays and out by the Cheesemakers' offense, the Red Hawks capitalized on their good field position when sophomore Nathan Hammon busted in for an 8-yard TD run at 4:26 of the first quarter.
Another Cheesemakers three-and-out, led to a 30-yard punt return by McIvor.
The big blow for the Cheesemakers came when Fry connected on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Karleski on fourth-and-5 from 15-yard line to give the Red Hawks a 21-0 lead at 1:07 left in the first quarter.
"They jumped on us early and put us in a hole," Miller said. "By bringing in Fort Atkinson and Milton, our conference only got better in my opinion."
McIvor bolted for a 50-yard TD run at the start of the second quarter to give the Red Hawks a 28-0 lead. McIvor rushed for 132 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.
Monroe senior Mitch Tordoff connected with Bryan Tordoff on a pass on third-and-16, just short of a first down in the second quarter. The Cheesemakers received a break, getting their only first down of the first half by virtue of a personal foul call on the Red Hawks. On the next play, Hammon recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown to give the Red Hawks a 35-0 lead.
Monroe senior Alex Dammen, who rushed for 158 yards in last week's win at Portage, was bottled up by the Red Hawks. The Cheesemakers were limited to 78 total rushing yards.
The Cheesemakers had six turnovers (three fumbles, three interceptions), which resulted in 19 points for the Red Hawks including an interception returned for a touchdown by Josh Meyers.
Monroe junior Matt Whipple led the Cheesemakers with 34 rushing yards on five carries. Tordoff completed 4-of-14 passes for 31 yards.
On the second play of the second half, Hammon raced for a 66-yard TD run to give the Red Hawks a 48-0 lead.
"The ball bounced their way all night long," Miller said. "That's not an excuse. I hope our kids have the character to rebound after a loss like this."
