MONROE - The Monroe boys hockey co-op fell behind early in the second period by two goals, and then stormed back before dropping a nail-biter 3-2 to Milton on Tuesday at SLICE Arena.

Milton's Junior Onofre scored the winning power-play goal at the 5-minute, 14-second mark in the third period.

"We played a really good game and things were looking good, but in the end penalties killed us," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "When you spend that much time in the box it's hard to win."

The Avalanche (0-6, 0-4 Badger South) had 10 penalties.

Milton's Logan Servin scored a goal at the 13:28 mark in the first period. Nico Pusateri scored a goal early in the second period to extend the Red Hawks' lead to 2-0.

Jared Cline, a Monroe High School sophomore, scored a goal with 5:12 left in the second period on assists from senior Tyler Johnson and sophomore Charlie Harris to cut the Red Hawks' lead to 2-1.

Early in the second period, Riley Jones of Darlington scored the game-tying goal for the Avalanche on an assist by Colton O'Connor to tie the game at 2.

That set the stage for the late-game heroics.

The Red Hawks outshot the Avalanche 46-35. Monroe goalie Heath Bear had 43 saves.
