MONROE - The Cheesemaker No. 1 golfing tandem of Eric Timm and Matt Miller finished first place in the Monroe Best Ball tournament Saturday, April 27.
Timm and Miller shot a 4-over-par 74, which was six shots ahead of the next best score. Timm and Miller had 12 pars and birdied No. 5 at a sun-splashed Monroe Country Club. It was just the third match for the Cheesemakers this year.
"Those two guys deserve it," Monroe golf coach Braden Rindy said. "They work hard. They are very consistent. That is what makes them good golfers. They always have good iron shots. They are smart players. They don't try to play outside of their games like other players."
Milton shot a 245 and finished nine strokes ahead of Monroe (254) and Monona Grove (256).
"I think we are a little disappointed," Rindy said. "We thought we had a really good chance to win it. We still feel like this is preseason for us. I feel like we are still knocking the competitive rust off."
Monroe's No. 2 doubles team of seniors Caleb Pagel and Aaron Hesgard shot an 88 and the No. 3 tandem of Tanner Thompson and Austin Coplien finished with a 92. The Cheesemakers No. 2 and No. 3 teams finished with the two highest scores. Milton had a three-shot lead after the front nine and were able to hang on to the win.
"They just couldn't get going," Rindy said of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams for the Cheesemakers. "If they hit a bad shot or made a mistake then the other one would make a mistake on the next shot. Our bottom two teams just didn't get it done. They had bad timing."
