BOSCOBEL - Monroe junior Jeffrey Hill is still hoping to soar past the school's pole vault record.
Hill cleared 14 feet to win the WIAA Division 2 Boscobel sectional Thursday to qualify for state for the second straight year.
"He has had his ups and downs this year," Monroe boys track coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "He really came through when he needed to."
West Salem (81 points) ran away with the sectional team title. Platteville just edged Monroe, 49-48 for second place as the Cheesemakers qualified four individuals for the WIAA Division 2 state meet June 4 and 5 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Monroe junior Michael Barrett cleared 6 feet, 3 inches to win a sectional championship in the high jump. The other state qualifiers include juniors Nick Walker who took third in the shot put (45-8 1/4) and Dylan Starck who finished fourth in the 800 (1 minute, 58.96 seconds).
"We knew they all had a chance," Hirsbrunner said. "We didn't know how good of a chance they would have. You never know what will happen at this meet."
Hirsbrunner said that he was just hoping that Barrett could clear 6-2.
"Every year 6-2 gets in," he said. "He made 6-2 on his last attempt and that sealed it."
The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Joel Henry, Matt Bush, Skyler Stingley and Starck just missed qualifying for state finishing fifth with a time of 8:11.16, which was less than four seconds behind Platteville for the final state qualifying spot. The Cheesemakers ran out of one of the slower heats after not running as fast in the regional. Hirsbrunner was still hoping the Cheesemakers would be a special qualifier.
"If some how we make it would be a miracle," Hirsbrunner said. "They had to run against themselves."
Junior Caleb Ahrens took fifth in the 110 high hurdles (:15.58), which was 0.02 away from qualifying for state behind Edgerton junior Tyler Dobratz (:15.56). Monroe's Alex Bartlett finished sixth in the 200 (:23.62) and Mike Reed took sixth in the shot put (44-5 1/2) and both just missed qualifying for state.
Brodhead-Juda sophomore Trent Jordan finished second in the 400 with a time of 51.18 seconds to qualify for state. Brodhead-Juda senior Mitch Wiesenberg took fourth in the pole vault (13-0) to also qualify for state. Junior Michael Peterson took fifth in the triple jump and was less than four inches away from qualifying for state.
Sugar River qualified one individual and its 3,200 relay team for state. Sugar River senior Josh O'Connor was the sectional runner-up in the discus (142-6) to qualify for state. The Raiders' 3,200 relay team of Brian Anderson, Dennis Haak, Beau York and Travis Beutler took third with a time of 8:07.28.
Anderson finished sixth in the 300 hurdles (:41.38) and Beutler took sixth in the 3,200 (9:58.76) as each missed qualifying for state.
