EVANSVILLE - The Monroe girls soccer team still is searching for its first official varsity win after going 0-1-1 at the Evansville Invite on Saturday.
Monroe (0-1-2) opened the invite with an 8-0 win over the Evansville junior-varsity team. Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said the game will not count in the Cheesemakers' record. Monroe senior Catie Eiserman and freshman Chelsea Haffele both scored three goals.
In its second match, Monroe trailed Palmyra-Eagle 1-0 at the half before breaking through in the second half.
Monroe sophomore Kylee Ritschard scored the game-tying goal on a header at 44:23 on an assist from Kirstie Hinojosa, which gave the Cheesemakers their second tie in their first three games.
"We really dominated the field," O'Neill said. "We really have to work on finishing."
Ritschard came up big in Monroe's season opener against Oregon, as her second half goal gave the Cheesemakers their first tie in the program's history.
The Cheesemakers played Saturday without four varsity players, including sweeper Alyssa Studer, who were taking the ACT test.
Monroe senior Niamh O'Neill-Culhane had seven saves to preserve the tie for the Cheesemakers.
Monroe closed the invite with a 2-1 loss to Evansville. The Blue Devils scored in the first nine minutes, but the Cheesemakers answered about 11 minutes later. Monroe sophomore Abbey Schneider scored a game-tying goal on an assist from Hinojosa at the 21-minute mark.
"We really worked to try to score some goals and get everyone playing time," O'Neill said. "It's hard to play three games in one morning. That was a factor with our players being tired and our numbers being down."
O'Neill-Culhane had three saves for the Cheesemakers.
"We had a lot of nice shots, but we couldn't find the back of the net," O'Neill said. "They showed a lot of perseverance and determination in the morning for every game."
Monroe will play Madison Edgewood at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Breese Stevens Field in Madison.
