STOUGHTON - The Cheesemakers pushed their conference winning streak to three games with a 6-3 extra-inning victory at Stoughton on Thursday.
The Vikings had a chance to win in walk-off fashion in the seventh, as they loaded the bases with two outs against Monroe reliever Mitch Marty. However, leftfielder Drew Nafzger made a diving grab on a fly ball to send the game into the eighth inning.
Nafzger was key all night for the Cheesemakers, finishing 3 for 4 at the dish with two runs, two steals and an RBI. Austin Burandt also had a pair of hits, a run and an RBI.
"We got some clutch hitting again. Nearly all of our runs came with two outs, even in that eighth inning," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said.
Stoughton scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first to get ahead 1-0, but the Cheesemakers scored two in the fourth to take the lead and another in the sixth to make it 3-1. The Vikings scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh to tie the game at 3-3.
Logan Wells pitched six innings for Monroe, allowing five hits, a walk and two earned runs while striking out seven. Marty allowed two hits, a walk, one earned run and struck out two in two innings of work.
"We played some good 'D' and Logan did a nice job keeping us in the game," Huffman said.
Every Monroe batter recorded a hit.
The Cheesemakers (4-3, 3-1 Badger South) has a pair of non-conference games coming up before getting back into conference action at home against Madison Edgewood on Thursday. Monroe travels to McFarland on Monday and hosts Baraboo on Tuesday.
