MONONA - The Monroe Cheesemakers won all four singles matches to defeat Monona Grove, 4-3, in Badger Conference boys tennis Tuesday.
It was a tough day for the doubles teams as No.1 doubles Patrick Gellings and Garrett Tschanz lost, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5; No. 2 doubles Jakob Baertschi and Cristian Noriega lost 6-3, 7-6; and No. 3 doubles Luke Molinaro and Luke Andraski fell 6-2, 6-3. With the team score tied 3-3, No. 3 singles player Eric Knudtson defeated Jimmy Platz of Monona Grove, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to give the Cheesemakers the win.
"Eric really picked up his play in the second and third sets," Monroe head coach Brad Saugstad said. "He worked hard at keeping some more balls in play and forcing his opponent into some mistakes."
No. 4 singles player Jess Hager got his first career win with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Monona Grove's Keegan Bohn. No 2 singles player Taylor Soddy remained undefeated at 6-0 following a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Silver Eagles' Jeremy Martinez. No. 1 singles player Carson Root defeated Hayden Anderson of Monona Grove, 6-3, 6-4.
Monroe improved to 2-0 in the Badger South and 5-1 overall. All five of their wins have been by the score of 4-3 this season.
