MILTON - Ethan Moehn finished second overall and Monroe's boys cross country team took top honors at Saturday's Badger South Conference Meet.

"This is our 22nd conference championship," said Cheesemakers coach Dave Hirsbrunner of the Badger Conference record. "This is our second in a row and sixth out of the past nine (years)."

Moehn, a sophomore, trailed only Madison Edgewood senior Joe McKenna in the 5-kilometer race, finishing 45 seconds back at 16 minutes, 42 seconds.

Steve Christiansen, a junior, came in fourth overall for Monroe with a time of 17:00, and seniors Joel Henry and Luke Peterson finished 6-7 at 17:04 and 17:05, respectively.

"Our goals was to try and get four runners on the first team all-conference. That has not happened in my coaching tenure (since 1996)," Hirsbrunner said. "First team was first through eighth, and ninth throuh 16th is second team."

Junior A.J. Cifuentes was 17th overall (17:56) to cap the Cheesemakers' scoring.

"The guys really executed our race plan. The title was never in doubt. We had four in the top eight the entire race," Hirsbrunner said. "The guys seized the moment and literally ran away with this one. It was fun to watch."

Edgewood (36) finished second and Fort Atkinson (79) third, both well behind Monroe's winning mark of 36 points.

On the girls side, junior Abby Rogerson was 11th overall with a time of 16:29 in the 4-kilometer race.

Therese Hughes, a sophomore, was the second Cheesemaker to cross the line, taking 22nd at 16:49. Sophomore Nicole Witt (29th, 17:17), freshman Kelley Baumann (34th, 17:41) and senior Molly Bazley (37th, 17:56) rounded out Monroe's scoring.

Madison Edgewood (38) won the conference title, finishing ahead of Oregon (61) and Fort Atkinson (69). Monroe (133) was fifth.

Sectionals will be Saturday in Monroe, with the girls race at 11 a.m. and the boys at 11:45 a.m. The top two of the 18 schools attending will earn the right to run at state Oct. 29 in Wisconsin Rapids, and the top five runners not on a state-bound team will also advance.
