MONROE - Sophomore Grace Tostrud went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to power the Monroe softball team to a 10-0 five-inning win Friday over Milton at Twining Park.

Monroe (8-0, 3-0 Badger South) batted around the order in a nine-run first inning to knock Milton's starting pitcher out of the game before an out was recorded.

"I was very happy with how we came out," Monroe coach Joe O'Leksy said. "Our bats were really clicking in the first inning. I was really happy because we came out and took it to them in the first inning after being off for a long time."

Monroe senior Meredith Hose led off by reaching on an error. Junior teammate Hailey Betthauser then doubled and freshman Alyse Maurer walked to load the bases. Monroe junior Olivia Bobak followed with a two-run double. Freshman Sydney Updike delivered a two-run single to give the Cheesemakers a 4-0 lead. Senior Alysha Witt came through with an RBI single. Freshman Katie Hayes doubled. Tostrud then blasted a three-run home run to left center.

"We have been working on generating more power and driving through the ball," O'Leksy said. "It's starting to pay off."

Six of the Cheesemakers' nine hits were for extra bases. Bobak went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Hose and Hayes also hit doubles.

Bobak pitched 4 1/3 innings to get the win. She allowed just one hit, struck out six and walked none. Maurer pitched 2/3 of an inning and walked just one.

"Bobak got ahead in the count," O'Leksy said. "When they did hit the ball, they hit the pitch she wanted them to hit. She kept them off-balance."

The Cheesemakers are hosting five other teams in the Monroe Invitational at 9 a.m. today at Twining Park. Monroe will play Orangeville at 9 a.m. and at 1 p.m. will play Tomahawk. Depending on who wins the pool, the Cheesemakers will play either at 3 p.m. in a third-place or fifth-place game, or at 5 p.m. in the championship game.

The three teams in the other pool are Waterford, Freeport and Delavan-Darien.

Black Hawk 10,

New Glarus 1

SOUTH WAYNE - In just her second varsity start, Black Hawk freshman Bailey Butler tossed a no-hitter to lead the Warriors to a 10-1 win over New Glarus in a nonconference game Friday.

Butler pitched a complete game and gave up one run, struck out 10 and walked four. The only run New Glarus scored came in the fourth inning. Butler walked New Glarus sophomore Zoe Moen and Faith Bump. New Glarus' Mckenzie Keehn then knocked in Moen on a sacrifice fly to cut the Warriors' lead to 6-1.

The game was first scheduled for New Glarus, but was moved to South Wayne. With the win, Black Hawk improves to 2-2 overall and remains at 1-1 in the Six Rivers East Conference.

"They couldn't get their field ready in time," Black Hawk coach Curt Leuzinger said.

Leuzinger was impressed by Butler's performance on the mound.

"She was in control tonight," Leuzinger said. "I was calling the pitches and she was hitting her spots. Her changeup was very effective."

Black Hawk sophomore Hannah Butler went 4-for-5. Sophomore teammate Natalie Leuzinger went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Bailey Butler was 3-for-5. Mia Jackson drove in four runs for the Warriors.

New Glarus senior pitcher Riley Parker pitched six innings and gave up nine earned runs on 17 hits, while striking out two and walking two.
