MHS bats finally come alive for five

MONROE - Brandi Trewartha's twisting, Texas-league double provided the smelling salts the Cheesemakers' offense needed in a 5-1 softball victory Thursday night at Monona Grove.

With her club down 1-0 entering the seventh inning, Monroe's No. 7 hitter led off with a high-English bloop double to right and quickly moved to third base on a wild pitch.

Then third baseman Katie Lenz hit a ball to short and, when the throw came home, the Silver Eagles were called for catcher's interference for blocking the baseline without the ball, allowing the first of five runs to come across.

"It's an awful lot like the way we found a way to win the Watertown tournament," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "We needed to catch a little bit of a break and if I'm the coach on the other side, I'm not sure how happy I am about the call."

Monroe's No. 1 pitcher, Renee Schuttler, got the night off in favor of hard-throwing No. 2 Carlie Olsen. But Schuttler still came through with the game-icing two-run single with two outs recorded.

"She kid of put the nail in the coffin," Buvid said.

Buvid said Monona Grove senior Sarah Bisbee was "at times the hardest thrower we've seen all year." Olsen was equally ferocious, as she worked ahead in most counts and only allowed an unearned run after the Eagles put their only two hits back-to-back in the fourth, the second of which was a single that Monroe played to a double.

Monroe's Kelsey Metcalf collected two hits in relieving Hannah Grossen, who broke her left hand trying to make a diving catch in Monday's 10-0 win over Oregon at Twining Park.

"Here's a kid who hasn't had a whole lot of at-bats and she came out with two big hits for us tonight," Buvid said.

Monroe hopes to get in today's road game with the Northern Division powerhouse Baraboo before Saturday's annual Monroe Invitational at Twining
