MONONA - Monona Grove knocked down 10 three-pointers to beat Monroe 63-29 in the regular season finale Thursday.
With the win, the Silver Eagles avenged a loss to the Cheesemakers earlier this season. Monona Grove (10-12, 6-6 Badger South) jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter. The Silver Eagles built an 18-point lead at the half, 30-12.
"They shot the ball pretty well and made 10 threes for the game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "For as well as they shot, we didn't shoot it very well. And that was kind of the difference. They did a real good job with that."
Monona Grove's Sydney Grossman scored a game-high 12 points and teammate Maddie Kneubuehl added 11 points.
"They pressed us for most of the game, and early they were able to get us to turn it over. And we just weren't able to make any conversions on the other end when we broke the press."
Monroe senior Alacia Keegan scored a team-high 10 points. Junior teammate Brooke Adams added nine points. With the loss, Monroe drops to 8-14, 3-9 Badger South.
Monona Grove outscored Monroe 25-7 in the fourth quarter.
"We came out in the third quarter and outscored them 10-8," Mathiason said. "They (Monona Grove) made five threes in the fourth, but I was proud of their effort tonight."
Monroe will play at Mount Horeb in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
"We played them the last two years - we beat them two years ago, they beat us last year," Mathiason said of Mount Horeb. "They have quite a bit of experience, and we need to have two good practices and make sure we're ready for Tuesday night."
