Meier, Warriors edge Golden Eagles

SOUTH WAYNE - Junior C.J. Leuzinger scored the winning basket, and senior Josh Meier scored 20 points and made a key defensive play in the waning seconds to carry the Black Hawk boys basketball team to a 53-51 victory over Barneveld on Thursday.

The Warriors (18-4, 9-3) finish the regular season in third place in the Six Rivers East behind champion Barneveld and second-place Pecatonica.

Black Hawk and Barneveld, the second-ranked team in Division 5 on the AP state boys basketball poll, split two games this season. The Golden Eagles won the first meeting 55-52.

The Golden Eagles trailed by four points with about 2 minutes left but the Warriors committed a couple of turnovers, allowing Barneveld to tie the game at 51 with about 40 seconds to play.

Leuzinger gave Black Hawk the lead with 4 seconds left.

Black Hawk intercepted a pass on Barneveld's next possession but was called for traveling, so the Golden Eagles got the ball back at halfcourt with 2.8 seconds left. Malcolm Reed's 3-point attempt was tipped by Meier.

"Josh Meier carried our offense tonight," Black Hawk coach Charlie Anderson said. "I can't give enough credit to Josh. He played an awesome game."

Black Hawk had an eight-point lead in the first half, but Matthew Myers hit a couple of 3-pointers to help Barneveld draw within 23-21 at halftime.

Meier had 10 points in the first half, and sophomore Conner Meyer added eight of his 15 points in the first half.

Black Hawk trailed 44-40 with about six minutes to play and closed the game on a 13-7 run.

Leuzinger and junior Michael Flanagan each added eight points for the Warriors.

Myers paced Barneveld with 15 points, and Reed chipped in 13.

Black Hawk hosts Madison Country Day in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal game Tuesday.

"We through out the records now and it becomes sudden death," Anderson said. "We are playing our best ball right now. We are hoping to make a run."



Albany 47, Argyle 41

ARGYLE - Senior Collin Argue scored a game-high 18 points and helped Argyle rally from a 15-point deficit, but Albany hung on for the victory.

Albany senior Connor Trow scored a team-high 17 points. Albany jumped out to a 27-12 lead at the break.

Argyle (3-19, 0-12 Six Rivers East) stormed back in the second half and got within three points, 40-37, with 3 minutes to go.

"We came out slow," Argyle coach Justin Jenson said. "It's been a problem all year. We come out and start slow. We switched to a man defense, and we clawed back in it. We made some mistakes, and they took advantage and made plays down the stretch to win it."

Albany sophomore Josh Dahl added 10 points, while senior Logan Ross pitched in nine points. Senior Brock Gilkes chipped in eight points.

The Orioles made 11 of 21 free throws, compared to the Comets (10-12, 4-8) who shot 15 of 26 from the free-throw line.

"We left some points off the board," Jenson said.

Argyle junior Brent Ritschard added eight points and sophomore Mitch Flannery pitched in seven points.



Pecatonica 53,

Juda 42

JUDA - Senior A.J. Hendrickson scored a team-high 19 points to propel Pecatonica to win over Juda.

Carter Ruegsegger added 10 points for Pecatonica (17-5, 10-2 Six Rivers East).

Juda junior Keagan Haffele scored a game-high 20 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. Senior Skyler Stuckey added 10 points for Juda (14-8, 6-6).



Lake Mills 87,

New Glarus 71

LAKE MILLS - Brady Wagner erupted scoring a game-high 32 points to lead Lake Mills over New Glarus (18-4).

Wagner hit eight 3-pointers and the L-Cats (20-2) raced out to an 11-point lead at the half.

New Glarus junior Cullen Brooks scored a team-high 19 points.
