McFarland tops Monroe in finale 98-72

MONROE - The seniors on the Monroe girls swimming team turned in an amazing season finale on Senior Night on Tuesday.

Monroe seniors Rachel Wellnitz, Cat Weeden and Nicole Thurik set six of the 21 personal records for the Cheesemakers in a 98-72 dual meet loss to McFarland.

"The girls battled and came out with 21 PRs for the night," Monroe coach Linda Moser said. "What a great way to end their dual season at Monroe High School."

Monroe junior Rachel Root finished first in the 200-meter individual medley and butterfly. She set a PR in the 200 IM with a time of 2 minutes, 34.61 seconds. She finished the butterfly with a time of 1:09.67.

Monroe's Briana Katzenberger finished first in the 50 freestyle with a PR of :31.07 seconds just out-touching teammate Sarah Kind who took second (:31.15). Katzenberger also set a PR in the 100 freestyle where she took third with a time of 1:09.05.

The Cheesemakers' 200 medley relay team including Root, Weeden, Kind and Angie Beaver finished first with a time of 2:15.32. Katzenberger teamed with Weeden, Kind and Root to take first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:01.14.

Beaver took second and set PRs in both the 100 freestyle (1:08.74) and the 100 backstroke (1:19.51).

"Both of Angie's races were close and could have gone either way, but she didn't give up," Moser said.

Wellnitz had PRs in the 50 backstroke in the medley relay (:39.20) and 100 backstroke (1:27.09). Weeden finished second in the 100 breaststroke and set a PR with a time of (1:28.73) and took third with a PR in the 200 freestyle (2:33.88). Thurik set PRs in the 200 freestyle (3:13.14) and in the 100 backstroke (1:42.60).
