MONROE - McFarland senior forward Dietrich Schwoerer, senior forward Drew Hettiger and junior forward Alex Gille each posted hat tricks to power the Spartans to a 14-2 win over the Monroe boys hockey co-op in the season opener Monday at SLICE Arena.

The Monroe Avalanche boys hockey co-op is comprised of players from Monroe, New Glarus, Freeport, Freeport Aquin, Belleville, Darlington and Orangeville. Early on, it appeared the Avalanche would push the Spartans.

"We started out playing the way I thought we should have in the first period," Monroe coach Josh Smith said. "It obviously shows that we can handle playing teams in the league. I seriously believe we could have been in it if we would have been on our A-game."

Hettiger scored the first goal 3 minutes, 38 seconds into the first period. The Spartans also got two first-period goals from Schwoerer to take a 3-0 lead.

Gille and Schwoerer each scored goals on assists from Caden Consolatti to take a 5-0 lead at the 13:49 mark in the second period. Consolatti finished with three assists.

Avalanche senior forward Colby Smith of Freeport Aquin, scored a goal on assists by senior Dennis Neary and Tyler Johnson to cut the Spartans' lead to 5-1 at the 13:39 mark of the second period. McFarland senior Gafbriel Prochazka scored two goals, including one short-handed, to give the Spartans a 9-1 lead.

The Spartans exploded for a total of eight goals in the second period to take an insurmountable 11-1 lead.

"We fell apart," Smith said. "That's the only way to put it. Once we started falling apart they (McFarland) started taking advantage of it. We got burned plain and simple."

Johnson scored his first goal of the season for the Avalanche on assists from freshman Charlie Harris and freshman Colton O'Connor at 12:56 in the third period.

Monroe goaltender Dan Guilliams had 37 saves.

"We have to do more to help him out," Smith said. "We have to be better at the fundamentals of passing and work on our conditioning."

Smith also said the Avalanche must improve on their speed and passing.

With six freshmen getting their first game of WIAA hockey under their belt, Smith expects improvement.

"Part of the problem with the freshmen is they are used to a slower paced game," Smith said. "I think they were caught off guard by the speed of it. I'm hoping they have seen the pace now, and they will have the jitters out."
