MONROE - Senior Brooke McBain and sophomore Ellie Grossen are keeping the Monroe girls tennis team's No. 1 doubles streak of state appearances alive.
This marks the fourth straight year that the Cheesemakers have had a No. 1 doubles team qualify for state. McBain and Kelsey Erickson made a run to the second round of the Division 1 state tournament last year. This year, McBain and Grossen will play Baldwin-Woodville's Katie Thompson and Tori Klingler at 8 p.m. today in the first round of the Division 2 tournament at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
"We don't know much about them," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said of the Baldwin Woodville's top duo. "It should be to our advantage. They should go in with nothing to lose. That is when they play their best tennis."
Each year the Cheesemakers have had an underclassmen matched up with an experienced player. McBain and Grossen enter the state tournament at 17-7.
"I'm proud to be one of the teams that makes it to state every year," McBain said. "It feels good to be back to state. I think Ellyn and I are playing as good as Kelsey and I were last year."
McBain has the experience of playing big matches at state.
"Brooke has definitely been a leader for Ellie Grossen," Miller said. "That helps having that experience. They are both very skilled players."
McBain remained confident heading to state.
"I feel like we can win a couple of matches," she said. "I feel like we will go out there and play our hardest."
McBain wants to enter the state tournament with a clear mind.
"I feel like I don't want to know who we are playing because I might psych myself out," she said. "It's better if I don't know much about them."
Grossen said she is nervous heading into the first round match at state. She is overwhelmed with the opportunity to continue the No. 1 doubles streak of state appearances.
"It was a goal from the start of the season to get to state," Grossen said. "I never expected to be a part of it (the No. 1 doubles state tournament success), but here I am now."
Grossen is relying on McBain to help her through her nerves.
"I'm excited," Grossen said. "Brooke has been there before. She is my best friend. She will help me with that. We don't get mad at each other. We laugh with each other while we are playing."
Grossen is focused on the first-round match tonight.
"I definitely just want to make it through the first round," she said. "It would be great to just get to Friday and we will go from there."
