Pecatonica 6, Barneveld 5
BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica junior Lane Busser had a go-ahead RBI double and sophomore Zander Brunker followed with what proved to be a game-winning RBI single in the fifth inning to help the Vikings beat Barneveld 6-5 Tuesday.
Brunker went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Busser was 2-for-3 with one RBI to propel the Vikings. With the win, Pecatonica (12-4, 9-1 Six Rivers East) has a three-game lead on Argyle in the conference and with one more conference win can assure themselves of at least a share of the league title.
Pecatonica junior Carter Ruegsegger started and pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out five and not issuing a walk. Senior teammate Evan Prust pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief to get the win. Prust gave up just one run on two hits, struck out six and walked three.
He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth by striking out two. In the sixth with the game-tying run on second base and two outs, he posted a key strikeout. Then again in the seventh with the game-tying run on second base, Prust came up with a key strikeout to get out of a jam.
"He made big pitches in crucial situations three innings in a row," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "When he needed to get back ahead in the count he did it. It was really a gutsy performance."
