MADISON - Logan Maurer of the Brodhead-Juda wrestling team faced a familiar opponent in his heavyweight matchup in the Division 2 state semifinals Friday. Unfortunately for the heavyweight contender, his latest attempt at gold once again fell at the hands of Kiel senior Matthew Halverson.

"I really wanted redemption in this matchup," Maurer said. "He beat me last year, so I really wanted to go forward and get the win this time around."

Being somewhat familiar with one another, each wrestler had a gameplan as they approached the match.

"We knew that he was good at throwing, so we wanted to maintain distance and ride out the first," Maurer said.

Halverson closed the distance to get the pin 3:36 into the match.

Although Maurer's chances of getting this year's gold fell short, he remains hopeful that he will end up at the podium when it's all said and done.

"I just have to hold my head up and move forward," Maurer said. "I can't do anything to change the outcome. All I can control is how I perform tomorrow. Hopefully, I'm able to perform well and make my way to a bronze."

Maurer will continue his journey for a medal tomorrow as he wrestles in a consolation match starting at 11 a.m.

Junior Gavin Baade also fell short in his title quest, losing a 4-1 decision in the 182 pound class to Dennis Schutz of Ellsworth.
