BRODHEAD - Jim Matthys is returning for a second stint as coach of the Brodhead-Juda football team.
Matthys served as the Brodhead-Juda head football coach for eight years before resigning three years ago when he was named the principal at Brodhead High School. The Brodhead school board agreed Jan. 13 to hire Matthys as the coach. Matthys will continue to serve as principal.
"Having him return back on the sidelines for our program to continue to have success is the best fit," said Brian Kammerer, the Brodhead High School athletic director. "He knows how to motivate the kids. Not only is motivation a factor, but he knows a lot of good coaches to help fill the staff."
Matthys, who was 69-26 in eight years of guiding the Cardinals, including a state runner-up finish in 2010, replaces B.J. Bockhop, who resigned from the head coaching position about a month ago.
Bockhop had a record of 21-11 and led the Cardinals to two straight Rock Valley South Conference championships and was named the conference's coach of the year the past two seasons. Bockhop will continue to serve as an assistant coach.
"I can't say enough about our coaches and staff at Brodhead-Juda over the years doing what they do to get the kids to compete," Kammerer said.
