MONROE - The YMCA Monroe Mat Rats wrestling team is in the hunt for another successful year after a strong showing at the Wisconsin State Tournament.
The Mat Rats are excited to be sporting a team with more than 40 wrestlers, ranging between the ages of kindergarten to eighth grade. December kicked off the start of practice and tournaments with new head coach John Witt. Wrestlers are working hard and preparing for the Monroe Mat Rat Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 22.
On Dec. 15, wrestlers Alex Witt, Lucas Andersen, and Tim Andersen made their way to Fort Atkinson Youth Wrestling Tournament. Witt and Lucas Andersen captured second places in the third and fourth grade brackets, and Tim Andersen started his season with a third place finish in the fifth and sixth grade brackets.
New Year's Eve Day may be the end of the year, but it was the first tournament the Mat Rats competed at as a team. Fifteen Mat Rat wrestlers participated in the Darlington Redbirds "Coach Hackett" Memorial Classic. The Mat Rats gave a solid wrestling performance overall with four first place finishes and six second place finishes, but being held just outside of the top three spots as a team.
Dayne Garwell finished first place in the kindergarten through second grade age group. Jack Dubach and Braden Rupnow each took second and Allen Wand was fourth.
Three wrestlers including Max Haffele, Patrick Rielly and Alex Witt took first in the third-fourth grade division. Monroe also had three third and fourth grade wrestlers finish secvond including Bodie Minder, Max Patterson and Aidan Sweeney. Kyle Haldiman and Luke Dubach each took third.
In the fifth-sixth grade division, Cole Lincicum finished third place and Cole Murray (seventh-eighth grade) took second place.
