The Monroe Area Swim Team hosted an awards banquet Sunday and several swimmers received accolades and awards for the summer season.
Monroe capped the summer swimming season with a sixth-place finish at the Jefferson Invitational. The invitational meet was highlighted by Marissa Berg, who set a meet record in the 11-12-year-old girls 100-meter freestyle.
The Dr. Frank Stiles award went to Nichole Lattin. A plaque is presented each year in honor of Dr. Frank Stiles by his family, who played a very important part in the establishment and development of the Monroe Area Swim Team. The award is (MAST) intended to recognize a swimmer for their dedication and leadership on the team.
The Fran Silvis award went to Conner White. The Fran Silvis award began in 1981, a plaque is given by the Robert Silvis children in honor of the seven years of hard work and dedication to swim team in the concession stand on the part of their mother, Fran Silvis. This award is given to a swimmer for their attitude, continual hard work, and attendance during the season.
The MAST Board award was given to Grace Keith. The MAST Board award is given each year by the MAST Board in honor of Steven Rufenacht, who was a member of MAST. and died of cancer at 10. In his memory, this award is intended to be given to a younger swimmer. Sportsmanship, attendance at practice and meets, and willingness to work hard, attitude, character and some swimming ability are taken into consideration.
Dylon Wilde was honored with the coaches' award. Sponsored by MAST, this inspirational award is given by the coaches. Attendance, sportsmanship, willingness to work and attitude which make this individual an asset to the team are taken into consideration. The team motto established by Dr. Frank Stiles, founder of MAST is "Do Your Best" and as he was the coach for MAST the longest, the motto is also used as a guideline in selecting the recipient for this award.
The ED Bader award was given to Joe Wyss. This award is given in honor of the dedication and all the hard work that he did as President of the Monroe Area Swim Team. This award is given to a team member who has not only improved as a swimmer, but had also been a great addition to MAST and has added to the quality of the swim team, through example and attitude.
