MARSHALL - The uptempo style of the Marshall girls basketball team helped the Cardinals roll to a 61-41 win over New Glarus Friday, Jan. 17.

Marshall (13-0, 3-0), ranked No. 5 in the WisSports.net Division 3 Coaches poll, outscored the Knights 13-7 in the first quarter and led by 11 points at the half. The fast breaking style by Marshall took a toll on New Glarus (5-7, 1-1 Capitol South) in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals outscored the Knights 19-8.

"They (Marshall) just keep running at you for 32 minutes and that is hard to defend," New Glarus coach Megan Scheele said. "We had our moments. They looked to run. If we didn't get back they scored. We have to sprint back on defense."

New Glarus was led by Breanne Kreklow who scored a team-high 10 points. New Glarus seniors Sierra Watrud, Courtney Feller as well as sophomore Vanessa Narveson each added eight points.

Riverdale 64, Darlington 39

DARLINGTON - The Redbirds were well aware they would have to be ready for Riverdale's trapping defense Friday.

Darlington (1-8, 0-4 SWAL) may have handled the pressure defense better, but the Redbirds lost to Riverdale 64-39.

"They didn't do anything we didn't prepare for," Darlington coach Kelly Rose said. "We dealt with it (trapping defense) better than we did the first time. It wasn't much of a factor in the game. Our girls worked really hard and I'm proud of them."

Riverdale's Amanda Meister scored a game-high 14 points and teammate Paige Fardette had 13 points. Darlington's Taylor Cox scored a team-high nine points and Mariah Wiegel and Callie Norton each added seven points.

Riverdale went 22 of 31 at the free throw line and the Redbirds finished just 8 of 23.

"We didn't make as many shots as I would have liked," Rose said. "They (Riverdale) shot the ball really well."
