MADISON - Monroe High School graduate Tyler Moser doesn't have to worry about making plans for New Year's.

That's because Moser is leaving Friday morning, along with the rest of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band, for Pasadena, Calif. to play in the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin takes on Oregon in the Rose Bowl at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2.

"It's the experience of a lifetime," Moser said. "It's a dream come true."

For Moser, who plays the the trumpet as a freshman, it will be an action-packed schedule. He will play in a Badgers pep rally New Year's Eve at Santa Monica Pier and play at L.A. Live New Year's Day. Moser will play in the Tournament of Roses Parade Jan. 2, Badger Blast and Badger Huddle pep rallies before the Rose Bowl. The 304-member marching band will also play at halftime of the game. Moser is one of 111 trumpet players.

Moser will have plenty of company as six other area graduates will make the trip including freshman Shianne Strommen (trumpet) and Gavin Garrett (tuba) of Brodhead; and junior Jason Moore (trumpet) and Devin Schlapbach (tuba) of Albany. Other former graduates from area schools are senior Sarah Burns (euphonium) of Monticello and sophomore Alex Atwell (cymbals) of New Glarus.

Strommen, like Moser at Monroe High School, spent four years honing her skills playing in the Brodhead High School band.

"I never would have imagined that I would be in California playing in the Rose Bowl," Strommen said.

Strommen said the environment for football games at Camp Randall Stadium is crazy. And, she said, the UW Marching band is hoping to bring some of that craziness to the Rose Bowl.

Moser said his first season playing in the band has been a blast. He has had the opportunity to meet other band members with local roots including Strommen, Garrett and Moore.

Moser and the marching band members practice eight hours a week and put in extra time as needed for upcoming shows throughout the year.

Moser said he has always looked forward to watching the Rose Bowl on TV. Now, he will be part of the Granddaddy of them all.

"Going to the Rose Bowl any time is exciting," he said. "You put in a lot of hard work and you never know how the team will be."
